2006 AMERICAN LEMANS LONE STAR GRAND PRIX SLATED
FOR MAY IN HOUSTON, TEXAS
HOUSTON, Sept 30, 2005 - The American LeMans Series announced today that it will stage the 2006 American LeMans Lone Star Grand Prix at Reliant Park May 11-12, in conjunction with Champ Car’s Grand Prix of Houston.
“The American LeMans Series is regarded in the racing world as the elite sports car racing series,” said Michael T. Lanigan, Chairman and CEO of the Grand Prix of Houston. “By staging this event within the confines of our overall three days and nights of speed and entertainment, we believe we will give race fans and others the ultimate experience.”
The American LeMans Lone Star Grand Prix will begin with a practice session on Thursday, May 11. On Friday night, May 12, the Lone Star Grand Prix will be the featured race – when as many as 30 sports cars in four different classes take to the 1.7-mile temporary street course at Reliant Park.
“As well as being one of the most significant markets in the country, Houston is a wonderful market for sports cars,” said Scott Atherton, President of the American Le Mans Series. “Our cars and our teams are going to provide a spectacular race for the fans, and we are proud to be associated with what is sure to be a magnificent event.”
The Grand Prix of Houston began in 1998 on the downtown streets of Houston and for four years electrified crowds in excess of 150,000 per event. After a four-year hiatus, the Grand Prix of Houston returns to Space City USA, with three days and nights of activities. The Grand Prix of Houston will begin on Thursday, May 11 and conclude with Champ Car’s first-ever night race on a street course on Saturday, May 13.
“We are taking the best elements of the past and adding more race programming and other activities to our event,” said Chuck Kosich, General Manager of the Grand Prix of Houston. “With the addition of the American LeMans Lone Star Grand Prix to our event, we are confident that this will be one of the most exciting weekends in our sport next year.”
